Monday: SCRATCH

Scratch is an appealing easy way for children and teens to make 2-dimensional stories, comics, simple animations, or even games.

  • You can download the old Scratch at: http://scratch.mit.edu/scratch_1.4/ Scroll down on this download page to see Scratch Cards – each one shows how to do a different thing.

Tuesday: HTML

We’ll use KompoZer, a visual html editor, http://www.kompozer.net/download.php to make a simple webpage and Codecademy http://www.codecademy.com/.

Khan Academy has uneven quality BUT the computer science tutorials are good: https://www.khanacademy.org/cs/welcome-to-computer-science/882454257

Some other sites to look at:

Wednesday: Minecraft

Minecraft is a world-building game online. You’ll need to buy an account ($26.95) to play at home. Players in one room can make a LAN and interact with each other.

  1. Coderdojo is in its 2nd year here in Albemarle County. It’s more like a free coding camp, rather than the Irish model of Coderdojo, which is a year-long in-depth community based coding effort. It’s 3 weeks long, but each class is a week. There are several different offerings, like a week of Javascript, a week of Intermediate Scratch or a week of HTML. My class was a Sampler week for the same students, Mon – Thurs 8:30 – 12:30. We started the week with about 35 and ended up with 23 on the last day. I’m hoping to be on the planning committee for next year – I have some ideas for new offerings!

  2. Was the full week for the same set of learners?
